Don Eirich has been involved with Southeast Asian affairs for the past 40 years. As a U.S. Marine Corps Officer, he served two tours in the Vietnam War and traveled extensively in the region as a member of a ready Marine battalion landing team.
For three years he served as the Chief of China Estimates at the Defense Intelligence Agency and as such represented the Department of Defense on several drafting committee of National Intelligence Estimates.
After his last military assignment, Eirich was appointed Director of Southeast Asian Affairs in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He remained in that position for several years and was awarded the Secretary of Defense’s Medal for Outstanding Public Service for his contributions to defense policy during the Marcos/Aquino transition in the Philippines.
Upon leaving government service, Eirich was appointed North American representative for Indonesian Aircraft Industries (IPTN) by company CEO and later President of Indonesia, Dr. B.J. Habibie. During his seven-year tenure at IPTN, Eirich directed marketing activities in North America, and most notably obtained an FAA agreement that provided for the certification of the IPTN CN-235 aircraft.
Don Eirich continued his involvement in Indonesian affairs when he was appointed as the congressional relations officer for the United States-Indonesia Society. In performing these duties, he maintained close contact with Indonesian government officials and members of the U.S. congress. He planned and led several delegations of congressional staffers on fact finding missions to Indonesia. Over the past several years he made a significant contribution to the relaxation of congressional conditions imposed on security assistance for Indonesia. He has also championed the importance that Indonesia’s ecology plays within the overall global environment.
